Black Friday anyone?

I just got done telling Heather you'd have to pay me to shop on Black Friday. It's a crowd thing. If that many people want to be there then I don't. So this is my one Black Friday post for the season. The Black Friday forum at Slick Deals seems to be pretty comprehensive including tips and anticipated sale items. And Wise Bread also has a post with shopping tips. With this much advanced notice, you have plenty of time to research quality and prices.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Some Quick Coupon Matching

I was at the Lebanon Coop earlier and spotted a few opportunities to match coupons to sales.

Sunday's paper had a $.50/2 coupon off Domino sugar which is $2.99 for a 5 lb bag this week. Good to use if you need sugar this week, but I'd save the coupon for a sale at Price Chopper or Shaws where they double. Nothing pops up right now but with the holidays there's bound to be a sale soon.

Find a $3/3 coupon off Natural Foods brands Spectrum, Arrowhead Mills, Imagine, Sunspire and Hain Pure Foods here and use it this week on Imagine Organic Soups (sale $2.99 for 32 oz), Arrowhead Mills flour (sale $3.99 for 5 lbs), and Spectrum Naturals Canola Oil and Flour Backing Spray (sale 4.75 for 5 oz). Note, printing this coupon will use an entire page. If you're trying to save paper try flipping the page over and upside-down.

Freeze

The Lebanon Coop has all their freezer goods 25% off today through Sunday. They are clearing out stock before installing new, more energy efficient freezers. I'm not sure these are stock-up worthy deals--I've seen better in the weekly and CAP fliers-- but they're worth a trip. I purchased a few treats and things that I don't see on sale that often. The popular items like frozen veggies and waffles are getting cleaned out fast. This sale is only good on what's in the case.

Little Princess

Is there a princess birthday party in your future? Wal-Mart has Princess playsets in their halloween clearance. The set includes a necklace, earrings, ring, wand and tiara all for $1.25 (regular price $5.00). They'd make great party favors or stocking stuffers.

Quick Coop Deal

Coop Food Stores in Hanover and Lebanon: Stahlbush Island Farms frozen vegetables are on sale this week 3/$5 which beats last week's case price of $2.00 per bag. Plus, the current COOP Advantage savings coupon book includes a $0.50 coupon which brings you to $1.16 a bag. In the Lebanon store you'll find the books in a wire stand just past the customer service window. I can't find an online version of the coupons either as a group or individually.

Gabrielle at Couponing in Difficult Times has a coupon match-up for this month's CAP specials.

Nearly New Part 2

First off, I think I forgot to mention in my last post that this Nearly New sale is for Fall and Winter clothes and that's all they will accept for consignment. The next Spring/Summer sale will be sometime around May.

I mentioned earlier that the secret to getting the best deals at a consignment sale is to shop early and the way you get to shop early is by consigning or volunteering. Volunteers and consigners shop at a special time before the sale is open to the public. Tracy Hall is a tiny room for a sale, and it will be packed to the rafters. The fewer people in there with you, the better.

A few other shopping tips:
* Get there early. The good stuff goes fast! And the line will start at least half an hour before the sale opens.
* Know your sizes/measurements. I like to bring a tape measure too.
* And know your brands. A $5 Circo tee is no bargain.
* Bring a laundry basket/IKEA bag/large tote to hold things while you shop.
* There is a dressing room for women's clothing so dress in something easy to get in and out of.
* Have a list and a plan. If there's something you really need, head for that first.
* Inspect everything carefully before you buy. Double check the size. Test fasteners. Check the sleeves on kids clothing for stains.
* Check one size up and one size down. Sometimes things don't get put in the right place.

If you're not consigning, consider volunteering for a shift or two. Consignment sales alway need more volunteers to work and as a reward you get to shop before everyone else. Sophia Crawford, the volunteer coordinator for Nearly New, says she most needs volunteers for Saturday, 11.30-2.30, but there are other shifts available as well. You can contact her at sophiajcrawford at hotmail dot com.

Lots of people like to work check-in (consignment and pre-consignment) to get an early peek at what's available. Working the actual sale can also be fun (wear comfy shoes). But for some reason I'm partial to working clean-up, often called "The Sort," where all the unsold items are sorted by seller into piles ready to be picked up. I think it satisfies some internal desire to create order out of chaos.

Consignment Sale Love

I love consignment sales! One of the factors I used in scheduling our trip to KY last August was the local sale schedule and we literally got off the plane, rented the car, and headed to a sale. I just love an opportunity to get most of my kid's clothes shopping done in one fell swoop.

Sort of a cross between a flea market and a consignment store, consignment sales are a seasonal event sale with many sellers under one roof. The sale is staffed by volunteers who in return are able to shop early. Sellers bring their goods priced and ready to sell and also get to shop early. The sale owner provides the location and equipment and runs the sale in exchange for a percentage of the selling price. Prices usually run about 50-75% off retail. These sales are very popular in the South and usually devoted to all things for kids.

Here in the Upper Valley, we have one sale: Nearly New. Run by the Norwich Women's Club, Nearly New offers designer and high-quality clothing in a discount boutique atmosphere. The bulk of their stock is women's clothing and purses but they have a respectable children's selection and men's clothing as well. The Norwich Women's club uses all of the proceeds to fund their scholarship program.

This fall's sale is Friday - Sunday, October 16-18th at Tracy Hall in Norwich, VT. The sale opens on Friday from 7 pm-9 pm. Saturday from 9-4. Items are half price on Sunday from 10-1 and their Bag Sale is from 1:30-3 pm.

It's not to late to consign. Consigning at this sale is easy because all you have to do is bring 50 of your best items, cleaned and in excellent condition. Everything will be inspected and the sale staff will help you price and tag your items. No need to hang anything as Nearly New provides hangers, although if your clothing wrinkles easily then bring it on a hanger to keep it looking fresh. Consignment times are Thursday from 9 am - 8 pm and Friday from 9 am - 2 pm. Consigners receive 50% of the sale price. Checks are mailed out within 4-6 weeks. The mailing fee is $1 or you can bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your clothing. Be sure to allow plenty of time if you have more than 10 items. I haven't consigned at this sale yet but I've heard the lines can be long so I'd definitely use a plastic tote to carry your items if you have one.

The best selection at a consignment sale is at the presale open only to sellers and volunteers. Sales never have enough volunteers and I'll write more about volunteering and shopping tips in a later post.

Catch-up

Hi everyone, I can't believe it's been over a month since my last post. To encourage me to get back into a blogging routine I told a few more friends about this blog and even gave them the address (waves shyly).

Rugged Bear is running a Buy More Get More sale. I'm not sure if this is just online or in store as well. Online use coupon code 10per to get 10% off a $50 puchase, 20per for 20% off a $100 purchase, and 25per for 25% off a $200 purchase. Shipping is free for orders over $100 and you can return online purchases at the store.

The Lebanon Coop is having their anual Case Lot sale today, Friday and Saturday from 9-7. Download the price list here and find more details here.

JCPenney's has several coupons good this week. Get $10 off a $50 purchase or $15 off $75 this Wed - Sat, Oct 7-10. Coupon here or use code 36CASH online or catalog. Sunday and Monday save 30% on regular prices, an extra 15% on sale prices, and up to 75% off clearance items with these coupons or online code 37VIP. The wording on that last one is tricky. The coupon is for 50% off clearance prices which leads to a discount of 75% off full retail. There are several restrictions on these coupons but clothes are always a safe bet.

Giggles on Rt 12A by Panera is taking 40-75% off fall clothing Friday through Monday.

Coupons and Kelloggs

This was a good coupon week in the Sunday Paper. I found 6 coupons for stuff we actually buy (vs stuff we might buy). That's just amazing. Usually, I'm lucky if I find one.

Today's paper also included a flyer for Kellogg's Fuel for School promotion. Buy 10 of any participating products in one transaction and receive a $10 rebate check and a $70 coupon code from Dell to apply against the purchase of a Mini or Studio laptop. Not a bad deal, especially if you're in the market for a Dell computer. The offer expires 9/30/09 and works in any grocery store.
